Some might like the company of little creatures in their home but when the little critters are those that bring in diseases and illnesses, you need to put matters in your own hands. Pest control companies use harmful chemicals in getting rid of these pests. These chemicals can be harmful to you and your family. You can rid of pests using chemical-free ways. Here are a few tips on how to rid your home of pests using chemical-free materials.

  1. Know your enemies

This step is as important as any other. You must be aware of what kind of pest you are trying to ward off. This way, you know what materials you need to use. Knowing might not enough to rid your home of pests, but it’s a step you must not overlook. After knowing your enemies, you can start buying materials to clean your house of pests.

  1. Clean up

Cleaning up is the most common and most needed way of keeping out little insects. Clean counter tops or areas where food could have in contact with. Keep sugar, honey, flour or anything that might attract critters in a container. Take out the garbage every day and place it in a can with lid away from the door. Wash dishes immediately. Recycle old and used papers and cardboard boxes, most rats, mice, cockroaches and other rodents like to burrow under them.

  1. Boric Acid

Boric acid is still part chemical, but it is safe since one of its major components, Boron, is also found in laundry powders, toothpastes and mouthwash. It is safe but it is still not consumable, it still brings harm if ingested in large amounts.

Boric acid serves as stomach poison to insects. The powder sticks to the insects when they step on it or when they come in contact with it. Upon bringing the powder to their colony, insects ingest it when they groom each other. You can mix it with sugar for ant bait or just place ample amount in the corners of your house for rats or mice.

  1. Cucumber

Cucumber is a common household ingredient. It can be bought in groceries and supermarket. Ants have a natural aversion to cucumbers. This will not kill the insects but will remove them from spaces you don’t want ants to be in, such as counters, dish racks, etc. Just put slices or peels of cucumber on the spaces. Bitter cucumbers work well.

  1. Cinnamon

Cinnamon is also a great ingredient to ward off ants from your counters, tables and corners. Just sprinkle a little amount in the areas infested and they will be gone. This is only temporary, the ants might return after cleaning up the cinnamon.

  1. Soapy Water

If you have a cockroach problem, just keep in hand a bottle of soapy water and spray a cockroach when you see one. This common household mixture kills the cockroach. Now all you have to do is clean up the dead insect.

  1. Basil

Fresh herbs are not just to add spice to your favourite dishes. Basil can also be used to ward off flies. Flies hate the scent of basil. Just keep a pot of basil and this is enough to keep them away. If your home is not plant-friendly, you can use dried basil leaves and keep it in a pouch, rubbing it occasionally. This still emits the same amount of scent and keeps the flies away.
