A lot of important events have taken place on Earth since the dawn of men. Many of these had such a great impact that the world today would not be the way we know it had such an event not occurred. All of those discoveries, voyages, and wars have paved the way to man’s current life. Imagine if the telephone was never discovered, or if there was no Great Wall of China. Although all of these milestones make History tests much more difficult, they mark a very important event in history that have indefinitely changed the course of time. Here are seven of the most memorable events in history.
- 9/11 World Trade Center Attack
Four planes were hijacked and used to bring about huge destruction in New York on September 11, 2001. Two of the planes crashed into the World Trade Center—first in the North tower followed by the South. These coordinated terrorist attacks led to the awareness of terrorism and it led to the formation of antiterrorism laws. It triggered the global war against terrorism and changed how people reacted to them. Apart from the huge destruction and hundreds of lives lost, the stereotyping of Muslims as terrorists is one of the negative results of 9/11 that is still evident until today.
- The Great Tsunami
Tsunamis have existed for so long and continue to exist. However, there is no known destruction caused by a giant wave as great as that of the Great Tsunami. On December 26, 2004, a huge wave from the Indian Ocean submerged several islands in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and the Nicobar Islands. It has caused one of the largest natural disasters in the world, leading to hundreds of lives lost. It is also due to the tsunami that the once southernmost tip of India known as Indira Point no longer exists.
- Reformation
Although the Reformation has its roots in the European history, its impact can be noticed even today all over the world. Before the Reformation, the Catholic Church had control over everything—the people and the government—of Christian societies. Then, people began questioning the practices of the Church as it began to diverge from that of the Bible. Thus, the Reformation was constructed in order to reform the Catholic Church back to its biblical roots.
- Birth of Muhammad
The birth of the Prophet Muhammad is not important for its date but rather, for it gave rise to one of the most influential religions in the world—Islam. The birth of the Islam religion led to many discoveries ranging from the Mariner’s compass to the Urdu literature. There is so much more to the religion than the terror it may have brought due to the stereotyping of Muslims.
- Medical Revolution
During the medical revolution of the 17th century, numerous discoveries in the field of medicine were made. One of the greatest of them all is the accidental discovery of the antibiotic Penicillin. Since its discovery, the human mortality rate was significantly reduced. Vaccination was also discovered, prolonging lives of those who would have died of smallpox back then.
- Birth of Christianity
Many religious concepts we know today—devils, angels, heaven, hell—were introduced to the world by Christianity. Until today, Catholicism remains as one of the most influential religions on Earth. It is even believed that Christianity is responsible for making men literate. Apart from that, schools, healthcare and welfare centers were first managed by missionaries of the Church. It is undeniable how great the impact of Christianity is when it is still noticeable until today.
- The Apollo Mission
The success of the Apollo Mission brought mankind a step closer to understanding space exploration. It offered a whole new perspective to the outer space as men were no longer restricted to telescopes and observatory walls. It led to further advancements and a race among nations to develop their own successful space programme.
