Eight DIY Ways To Naturally Lighten Your Hair

Keeping your hair bright is quite a handful task to do, especially for those with naturally or artificially-coloured blonde hair. It’s very impractical to frequently pay visits to the salon more than you actually need. Thankfully, there are a few natural ways you can lighten or add some highlights to your hair. The best part is that it’s way less damaging to your hair even when done in moderation, unlike those products they use in the salon which are loaded with chemicals. It’s cheap too. In fact, you’ll find most of these ingredients right in your kitchen. Here are some DIY ways you can naturally lighten or highlight your hair.

1. Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is the first and foremost solution to a lighter hair since it’s the most effective. Perhaps everyone knows by now that lemon juice has a natural bleaching property. Its effectiveness in lightening the hair mostly relies on the citric acid in lemon juice that opens up the hair cuticles and lifts out the dark pigment when the sun heats it up.
Make a solution of one part lemon juice and three parts water then place it in a spray bottle. Then just spray it on your hair before heading outside.

2. Baking Soda

Baking soda will get rid of any chemical build-up in your hair while also lightening it in the process.

Mix ½ cup of baking soda with enough water to make a paste. Be careful though, if the paste is too thin, it won’t hold in your hair, and if it’s too thick, it will dry too quickly so neither will work. Make a paste that’s just right. Apply it on your hair and leave it for 15-20 minutes before washing it out.

3. Honey

Honey contains a small amount of hydrogen peroxide which can effectively bleach the hair and it’s also deeply moisturizing which can prevent the hair from drying out due to lightening, making it the perfect method of lightening the hair. However, it’s very sticky and difficult to wash out. To counteract this drawback, add a little vinegar or water.

Make a vinegar or water and honey mixture then apply it on your hair. Wrap your hair with plastic wrap then secure it in place by putting on a shower cap or wrapping a towel around your head. Leave the mixture overnight and wash it in the morning.

4. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile tea is a gradual hair lightener, making it a better option for brunettes.
After brewing some chamomile tea in the usual way, let it cool, then rinse your hair with it after washing with shampoo and conditioner.

5. Cinnamon

Chamomile can subtly lighten dark hair without the consequence of acquiring a brassy or orange tone. It’s not harmful to the hair and may be repeatedly used as often as you prefer.

Add some cinnamon powder to a handful of conditioner then apply it evenly on your hair. Put on a shower cap and leave the mixture on your hair overnight. Rinse with shampoo in the morning.

6. Beer

Beer can both lighten your hair and repair your damaged strands. You’ll need to use a light beer for this. Simply rinse your hair with the beer.

7. Salt

You might have already experienced the hair lightening effects of salt if you’ve ever swam in salt water.

Mix one part salt with five parts water and then rinse your hair with the mixture. Leave it for at least 15 minutes before washing it off.

8. Rhubarb

Rhubarb can naturally lighten your hair but because of the pectin in it, it can get sticky if left too long on your hair.

Boil ¼ cup of chopped rhubarb in 2 cups of water. Strain, and then apply the juice on your hair. Leave it on for 10 minutes before washing off with clear water.
