7 Home Remedies For Eye Infection

Eye infections are not uncommon and they can affect anyone at any age. Eye infections can be caused by viruses or bacteria and it can affect one or both eyes. Some of the most common eye infections include conjunctivitis, stye, blepharitis, keratitis, orbital cellulitis, and dacrocystitis. Usually, these eye infections can cause symptoms such as redness, swollen eyelids, yellow discharge, pain, and tearing. Poor hygiene, immune deficiencies, and exposure to other people with contagious eye infections may cause the eye infection. Eye infections can usually be treated on your own and is not a serious health condition. Of course, you should still get your eye checked out by a doctor to make sure there’s no serious underlying condition that can damage other parts of your eyes. To help the treatment process, here are seven home remedies for eye infections.

  1. Warm compress

Warm compress is very effective for eye infections such as stye and conjunctivitis. It will increase the blood circulation around the affected area thereby helping the infection heal faster. Simply dip a lint-free cloth in warm water then wring out any excess water before applying the warm compress over the closed infected eye. The warm compress will also reduce the pain and the swelling of the eyes. Repeat 3-4 times a day until the infection gets better.

  1. Saline solution

Washing your eyes with a saline solution can help remove the build-up of debris and prevent the infection from spreading. It will also offer relief to inflamed, irritated, itchy eyes. Mix a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Use the solution to thoroughly rinse the affected eye. If possible, use distilled water to make sure that there are no impurities in the water that may cause further irritation to your eyes. Repeat several times a day.

  1. Cold water eye bath

Rinsing your eyes with cold water will strengthen your eyes thereby helping ward off the infection. It will also help restore the natural expression of your eyes while cleansing away any impurities and debris. Fill a clean basin with cold water then dip your face in it and blink repeatedly for about 5 seconds. Lift your face from the basin to breathe then repeat three or four more times.

  1. Honey

Honey has natural antibacterial properties that can help get rid of the bacteria that are causing the infection in your eyes. Mix equal parts of honey and distilled water. Dip a cotton ball in the mixture then apply it on the affected eye. Repeat 2-3 times a day until the infection has healed. Alternatively, you can put a drop of honey directly into the affected eye. You might tear up but it will also help in getting rid of any debris in your eyes. Repeat 2-3 times a day. Make sure you’re using organic honey without any added preservatives for the treatment.

  1. Tea bags

Tea bags can help reduce the burning sensation in the infected eye. Simply soak a tea bag in cold water then place it over closed eyes. It will provide immediate relief and reduce the irritation, inflammation, and itchiness. For best results, opt for green tea bags. Green tea is rich in tannic acid which can help reduce the infection as well as promote overall eye health.

  1. Chamomile

Chamomile is very efficient at treating eye infections such as conjunctivitis. It has anti-irritant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe the symptoms of eye infection. Make some chamomile tea and use it to clean the inner and outer eye. Repeat several times throughout the day.

  1. Boric Acid

The antimicrobial properties of boric acid can prevent the infection from spreading and can help it heal faster. It will also provide relief for the symptoms of eye infection such as dryness, redness, and burning sensation. Make a solution out of 1/8 teaspoon medicinal grade boric acid and 1 cup of filtered water then boil it and allow it to cool. Strain, and then use the solution to rinse your eyes. Repeat 2-3 times a day until the infection is healed.
