Top Causes of Feminine Odor

One of the more embarrassing female concerns is the problem of vaginal odor. Because of the hygienic implications and feminine issues surrounding such a condition, many women are ashamed to talk about it, or even mention it to their doctors. However, it is important that they do, since unpleasant feminine odor can have serious health implications if left untreated. Here are some of the top causes of abnormal vaginal odor.

Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis is perhaps the most common perpetrator of vaginal odor. Everyone has their share of their own body’s natural bacterial communities. When one has BV, it means that there is an overgrowth of certain kinds of bacteria. It is known that douching and unprotected sex can trigger a case of BV. Every woman will go through at least one bout of BV in her lifetime, and while the condition can go away on its own, it is suggested that women should visit a doctor to see if additional steps are needed aside from a course of antibiotics.

Yeast Infection

Yeast infections have similar symptoms as bacterial vaginosis, but with the addition of a thick and white vaginal discharge. Thankfully, treatment does not include antibiotics. In the case of a vaginal yeast infection, one only needs anti-fungal treatments, usually around one to three rounds of it. The medications or drugs needed for treatment can even be purchased over-the-counter. However, since the treatments may be messy, it is a good idea to use them overnight, preferably during a shut-in weekend.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

It should be noted that not all STDs can cause feminine odor, but if one engages in unprotected sex, then this possibility should be considered. Here are some of the more common STDs that can cause abnormal vaginal odor.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a vaginal infection caused by bacteria that is similar to gonorrhea. Treatment usually involves antibiotics.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is also a vaginal infection caused by specific bacteria, and like Chlamydia, can be treated with antibiotics.

Trichomoniasis

This STD is caused by a parasite that is usually transmitted during sex. Like most STD’s, thankfully, it can be cured with a specified treatment cycle of antibiotics.

Pelvic Inflammatory disease (PID)

This condition happens when a vaginal infection escalates, and the bacteria travels to the uterus. It can be the result of the late stages of an undiagnosed STD. Aside from an unpleasant feminine odor, other symptoms include pelvic pain, heavy discharge, fever, difficulty in getting pregnant, painful intercourse, and painful urination. PID can still be treated with antibiotics, but possible scarring may happen.

Other causes

There are many other causes for unpleasant feminine odor, such as:
– Poor feminine hygiene
– Tampons, particularly if they have been forgotten; this can lead to abnormal vaginal odor during sex
– Wearing tight underwear

It should be noted that pregnancy could also trigger a strong vaginal odor, given the hormonal changes, possible infection due to adjustments in body chemistry and ph levels, and dietary imbalances or requirements.

As always, it is best to check with a gynecologist just to be sure.
