0

Vulva odor, more commonly referred to as vaginal odor, is any type of abnormal and unpleasant odor or smell originating from the vagina. It is often characterized as a ‘fishy body odor’. Vulva or vaginal odor is often associated with a number of other symptoms including vaginal itching, vaginal discharge, and vaginal irritation.

If you are suffering from this particular condition, it is wise that you get to know more about it, particularly its causes, it symptoms, and the available treatment options.

Causes

There are many possible causes of vulva odor. However, the most common of which is bacterial vaginosis. This takes place where the normally and naturally occurring vaginal bacteria experiences overgrowth. There are also a number of sexually transmitted diseases that may cause this unpleasant and strong vaginal odor. A forgotten tampon or one that has been retained for quite some time inside the vagina can also eventually lead to this problem.

In a nutshell, the most common causes of unpleasant and abnormal odors emanating from the vagina include the following:
• Bacterial Vaginosis
• Chlamydia
• Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
• Vaginal Yeast Infection
• Trichomoniasis
• Gonorrhea
• Poor Hygiene

In addition to the common causes mentioned above, there are also some cases, though much less commonly, wherein this problem may occur because of vaginal cancer, cervical cancer, and rectovaginal fistula.

Symptoms

In many cases of vulva odor, the symptom is the unpleasant smell itself, which is characterized commonly as a ‘fishy body odor’. Vaginal odor typically results from the inflammation of this area, something that is caused by infections around or within the vagina. However, as this problem is also caused by sexually transmitted diseases, many of which such as chlamydia and gonorrhea can develop without the person experiencing symptoms, it is highly possible that they are not aware of their underlying health problems.
